Pharmacology

Albendazole is a widely used anthelmintic drug. It is effective against a variety of parasitic worms, including roundworms, tapeworms, and roundworms. Albendazole acts against worms in three main ways: (1) it kills the harmful worms directly (vermicidal); (2) it destroys the eggs of the worms (ovicidal); and (3) it kills the larval stages of the worms (larvicidal). Albendazole works by blocking the worm’s ability to take up glucose. As a result, the required energy in the worm’s body decreases, and eventually the worm dies due to a lack of energy to survive.  Also, albendazole induces stasis of worms.  Albendazole and its metabolites are thought to inhibit tubulin polymerisation by binding to a protein called tubulin in the worm.  This process causes the worm to become stagnant. Although albendazole also binds to human tubulin, binding to worm tubulin is more potent. Albendazole is poorly absorbed from the gut.  The absorbed portion is rapidly metabolised in the liver.  The major byproduct of this metabolism is albendazole sulfoxide, which has anthelmintic activity.  The half-life of albendazole sulfoxide in blood is approximately 8.5 hours.  These byproducts, along with other metabolic byproducts, are eliminated from the body through urine.
